Sal Salvia’s transportation class once again built custom bicycles this year. The class worked on their bikes up until the final day of the school year.
During the project, students learned all parts of a bicycle, and how to take it apart, and reassemble it into a new design. They also learned tool-use safety, mig welding, metal work, as well as bicycle safety.
The assignment was to build a custom bike out of available bicycles.
Thirteen students were in the class.
Over the course of the next couple of weeks, we will be featuring the students and their bikes. The first bike is Mr. Salvia’s. Besides their individual bikes, some students also worked on other bike projects, which we will also share.
He calls this bike Rubik’s, and build this bike because a Rubik’s cube is a cool toy. This bicycle started out as a lawn-art bike that needed a lot of attention. The custom storage box Is two inches thick, and six inches high and wide. It was painted to look like a Rubik’s cube. The custom chain guard is also a favorite part of the design.
Parts from three bicycles built this bike. It has coaster brakes, and 26x1.25 wheels on aluminum rims. The bike also has a holder, made out of a tire and two fork ends, for an actual Rubik’s cube. Lastly, Mr. Salvia painted and re-assembled with grease in all needed areas.
This bike was built to demonstrate to the students that custom bikes can be built by adding to the bike without making changes to the structure strength.
Stay tuned for the student creations!

Help Walter the Warrior Rock Snake grow!
Walton CSD eighth-grade art students in Lara Fassler’s class, as well as those in Crush Connects, painted rocks this past fall during a trip to the Uplands Center to form a rock snake.
Fassler worked with Chamber of Commerce member Trisha O’Brien to get permission from the Village of Walton for Walter to live and grow at Austin Lincoln Park.
Here’s where you can come in! Paint a rock and add it to Walter! The goal is for Walter to grow and make his way all the way around the path this summer!
