This week, Walton CSD librarian Barb Geidel has been telling students a story when they come to class in the library.

The beginning starts with "There was a young girl named Valarie Kite. She was a student here at Townsend Elementary School and she loved to read…” The start of that story is what Geidel tells the students about the new corner of the library called “Mrs. Vogel’s Reading Nook (the perfect place to read a book).”

The story continues “She graduated from our high school and became a guidance counselor, and then, because she loved children so much she became the principal of our school, and her name then was Mrs. Vogel.”

In memory of Valarie Vogel, her family gave the school a list of her favorite books that she used to read with her own children and grandchildren, as well as students at Townsend Elementary. When donations arrived after Vogel passed away, Geidel used the money to purchase those books for the Townsend Library in Vogel’s name.

The Reading Nook is a comfortable corner where students can relax on cushions with a good book and remember Vogel in her gift to the children in the Walton community.
