Chandler Merwin captures state championship

Chandler Merwin became the first wrestling state champion for Walton since C.J. MacNaught in 1995 as he earned the Division II 126-pound championship this past weekend in Albany.

Merwin becomes the third state champion in Walton’s history. Don Stanton was the school’s first champion in 1968.

Merwin opened the state tournament with a pin of sophomore Tyler Wyman (Hackley) in 2 minutes, 46 seconds. He then defeated junior Colby Petrie of Medina, 8-1.

In the semifinals, Merwin needed the ultimate tiebreaker overtime to get past fourth-seeded Marek Bush, a sophomore from Central Valley Academy.

In the championship, Merwin beat second-seeded Bradley Cheek, a senior of Canisteo-Greenwood, 7-2.

Two other wrestlers competed this weekend for Walton at the state tournament.

Senior Caleb Robinson finished sixth at 120 pounds, and sophomore Cody Merwin finished 2-2 at 113 pounds in his first state tournament.
